Anatoliy V. Torkunov
Anatolii V. Torkunov holds an MA and two doctoral degrees in Political Science from MGIMO-University. Since 1974, he has taught at MGIMO as Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and Professor at the Department of Oriental Studies and Department of International Relations and Foreign Policy of Russia. In 2003, he was elected Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and in 2008 he became Full Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
In 1974–1977, he served as assistant to Rector of MGIMO. In 1977–83, he was Dean and Vice-Rector for External Relations, in 1986–92 — Dean of the School of International Relations, First Vice-Rector and Head of the Department of Oriental Studies. Since 1992, he has served as Rector of MGIMO-University. In 1971–72 and 1983–86, Anatoly Torkunov served at Soviet Embassies in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and the United States of America. He has the rank of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary. Prof. Anatoly v. Torkunov is a leading expert on Russian foreign policy, regional subsystems in Asia-Pacific Region and North-Eastern Asia, modern history of Korea, diplomatic history and practice. He is the author of more than 150 research papers, including 9 individual monographs. Several of them were published in the United States, China, South Korea, Japan and other countries. His works made great contribution to historical analysis and Korean studies, developed new conceptual approaches to the settlement of Korean peninsula conflict. Professor Torkunov also holds positions of the Chairman of the UN Association of Russia; President of the Russian International Studies Association; Member of the Academic Council of the Security Council of the Russian Federation; Member of the Board of the Russian Diplomatic Association; Chairman of the Curricula Development Association of Russian Schools of International Relations. Since 2007, he is Co-Chairman of Russian-Polish Group on Difficult Matters. Anatoly Torkunov is a member of editorial boards of a number of Russian and international academic journals. Prof.
Anatoly Torkunov is Honorary Citizen of Seoul. He has received top government awards from Russia as well as France, Poland, the Republic of Korea, Bulgaria, Mongolia, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan..
